چکیده

This paper discusses the effectiveness of various speculative techniques to minimize the latency of virtual channel router pipelines. The proposals are compared to each other as well as to a 4-stage (20 FO4) canonical example router. One technique reduced the router to a single stage (35 FO4), but was not flexible enough to accommodate adaptive routing algorithms. Another implementation uses two pipeline cycles (FO4 not reported) but works with both adaptive and oblivious routing algorithms. In both cases substantial latency gains are observed with the use of speculation.

Design of a Low-Latency Router Based on Virtual Output Queuing and Bypass Channels for Wireless Network-on-Chip

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...

Congestion estimation of router input ports in Network-on-Chip for efficient virtual allocation

Effective and congestion-aware routing is vital to the performance of network-on-chip. The efficient routing algorithm undoubtedly relies on the considered selection strategy. If the routing function returns a number of more than one permissible output ports, a selection function is exploited to choose the best output port to reduce packets latency. In this paper, we introduce a new selection s...

Using Clos Switches in Area Efficient Asynchronous SDM Routers

Most of current asynchronous on-chip routers use the virtual channel flow control method which compromises throughput and latency. Instead of using virtual channels, an asynchronous spatial division multiplexing (SDM) router has been proposed recently. The major design overhead of an SDM router is the enlarged central switch which increases proportionally to the number of virtual circuits. Clos...

An Improvement of Router Throughput for On-Chip Networks Using On-the-fly Virtual Channel Allocation

With the trend to integrate a large number of cores on a single chip, Network-on-Chips (NoCs) are becoming more important for communication on System-on-Chips (SoCs). Designing high throughput and low latency on-chip networks with reasonable area overhead is one of the main technical challenges. This paper proposes an architecture of router with on-the-fly virtual channel (VC) allocation for hi...

A Delay Model for Router Microarchitectures

Current router models [2, 3, 5, 6] assume that clock cycle time depends solely on router latency. However, in practice, routers are heavily pipelined, making cycle time largely independent of router latency. In this paper, we describe a router delay model that accurately accounts for pipelining based on technology-independent delay estimates derived through detailed gate-level analysis. Simulat...
